    Pewaukee - Politics

My apologies for the late posting on this, I was away for the weekend and I simply ran out of time.

The agenda for the May 18th Common Council Meeting is available on the City's website. It is a fairly light agenda and the Council packet really does not have a lot to offer on any of the agenda items.

Judge Glojek has three items, two relating to forfeiture fines, one to increase the amount and another to hire a collection agency. The third item has to do with an Illegal Alien ordinance. I do not have any additional information on any of these items.

Item 7 on the agenda is the recommendation from the HR Committee to create three Lieutenant positions within the department. The positions would be staffed by existing personnel so there would be no increase in full time positions. The positions would free the Division Chiefs of some of the direct supervision as well as providing for accountability on the fire grounds.

As with many areas around the lake, there are parking issues. Item 8 on the agenda is specifically about issues that have arisen on Parkside Drive. We have received a number of complaints about illegally parked vehicles, many of them customers of Doc's Dry Dock which is a business in the middle of a residential area. The traffic ordinance currently has both the north and south side of Parkside as no parking, however it appears that in 2001, the Council ordered the signs removed, yet the ordinance was not changed. I have been in discussions with the Acting Police Chief and the Acting Fire Chief, and both are in agreement that because the road is narrow, a 30' right of way instead of the usual 66', street parking is a concern from a Public Safety point of view. I also understand the desire for residents to have places for guests to park. Alderman Enters and I met with both Chiefs last week and took a road trip to evaluate the situation and we have come up with a compromise. We will be proposing a staggered parking arrangement on the north side of the street. The south side is to remain no parking.

For the last open session item there is an informational update on the possibility of a renewed attempt at the state level to amend the State Constitution to allow for different tax rates for a merged municipality. It appears that Representative Scott Newcomer will be working with Representative Gordon Hintz to reintroduce a bipartisan bill for such a Constitutional amendment. If the effort was successful, the earliest it could be effective would be 2011 as it would need to pass two sessions of the legislature and a statewide referendum.

Here's some food for thought. IIRC, your Judge Gary as part of his request for fining "illegals", it seems to me it was mentioned that he stated that the City was being over run with them. I just wonder where they are all living? 5 Fields, Wetherfield, Ishnalla Hills? Hmmm Can anyone provide any sightings?

Maybe OUR boys need to check out Morris Street.

The thing to do is when these "illegals" are caught, they should be turned over to ICE and give them a trip back to their home country. If you try and fine them and give them probation or time to pay, you'll never see them again..nor will a collection company. Se' Senior'

Its all about the $$$ in the end.

    Andy,

Without comment or insight on where the 'illegals' are living I do want to point out that one of the concerns expressed by Captain Meister is that when the PD holds someone who is undocumented, the Feds do not have the staff to deal with them. Since immigration is a federal issue, if they will not handle the issue, we are forced to let the go.

One idea that was presented by the judge was that often the undocumented will find a way to pay a fine instead of being thrown in jail where they may have a better chance of being deported. I cannot say how accurate that is.

The idea of an ordinance on 'illegal immigrants' does have a lot of red flags. It has been mentioned that the constitutionality of such an ordinance would be questioned. No doubt about that. If we were to enact such a thing, Pewaukee would be the first in Wisconsin. That opens us up for a whole lot of publicity. Probably not good publicity either.

I am not against immigration, if it were not for immigration, most of use would not be here enjoying the freedoms that we do. Really the issue boils down to this in my mind. Immigration is a Federal issue and a federal responsibility. Instead of making laws that fine someone for not having proper documentation, perhaps more should be done to promote the proper handling of immigration on the federal level. On the local level, we should not be enacting fines on violations of federal law. On the state level, we should not be granting drivers licenses to undocumented immigrants and we should not be subsidizing the education of someone who is in this country illegally at the tax payer expense.

Amen to your comments Dale. I have a friend who wanted to live in Mexico. In order to enter the country legally she needed to meet the following prerequisites. She needed $50,000 in cash to deposit in a Mexican bank when she entered the country to live there, or she needed a Mexican National sponsor and a JOB.

One of her family members was married to a National (citizen in English), and he gave her a job in his restaurant and also signed as her sponsor. She lived there legally for two years. Her "family member" sponsor and she had an argument, he fired her. She was given two days to leave the country, or would have spent years in jail, for being in the country illegally.

What makes us so vulnerable to illegal aliens? We have no real enforcement of our laws. It doesn't seem to me that other countries have trouble enforcing their immigration laws. What's wrong with a policy of no Green card, no job, and no sponsor equating to no access to our benefits and constitutional rights? Why are we sheltering and protecting anyone who doesn't follow the law when they want to immigrate to the US?

    Dale,

Like a true man, I will stand up and take some of the blame for this. A few years ago, I brought in quite a few illegal Mexicans to build my Pewaukee mansion. After my mansion was finished (quite cheaply, might I add) I released them into the wild (Morris St.). Since that time, apparently they started breeding like crazy and have since established themselves like an Emerald Ash Borer.

However, a few of them still cut my lawn - so let's not send them back quite yet.

I disagree that this would necessarily be "bad" publicity. My belief is that
such an ordinance would lack any teeth and be easily loopholed, but
what's wrong with sending a message that Pewaukee is not a safe haven
    for illegals?

What??? How is the City or Village being a haven for illegals as they are everywhere. Are all of them just coming here? Where are they? Lets be specific. This sounds like nonsense to me and another make work project.

To me, a haven for them is at 16th/National in Milw or in the City of Waukesha. It would be my opinion that some of these illegals are doing the yard work for the the McMansions and businesses in Pewaukee and the whole lake country area for that matter....but not hanging out here after work.

A second point, since alot of them can't read, write or speak/understand english, how could they understand our laws? IMO, if we determine that they are illegal, they need be deported, rather than being catered to.

Got to love waking up this morning to word of more corruption and disharmony within the fine Pewaukee Police Department. Maybe it wasn't Chief Bach that was the problem after all. Looks like it's time to start our quarterly bashing of the biggest joke in waukesha county since Carrot Top performed at RiverFest.

Why would you say current city PD debacle wasn't "Bach-based?" With the long list of disciplinary actions against her how did she ever get promoted to sergeant? Hint - Bach was chief at the time ... oh, and didn't she testify for him at his PFC hearings last December? Until we get a new chief with no past ties or loyalties to current department personnel city residents will continue picking up Bach's tab.

how is it not bach-based? these officers do have brains of their own i hope. they are fully capable of thinking and acting on their own, which they did here. it proves that this department can be just as dysfunctional as a west allis family without bach. you probably still blame Uncle Joey for Stephanie driving the car into the kitchen. Danny Tanner knew where the blame lay and knew that Steph should have known better. just like these officers shoudl know better.

well the water tower needs to get painted, so are we to blame Dale? i mean after all, it has been needing to be painted while under dale's watchful eye. after Dale is gone, we should keep saying "that water tower would have been repainted except for dale regime holding it down."

new boss, same problems. maybe it's not the boss' fault.

I wish Dale would come back. This thread has lost every fiber it started with. The Agenda for the June 18 PFC meeting shows that we are finally getting a new Fire Chief. Acting Chief Bierce will be sworn in that day. It's about time, Pintar quit a year ago in March.

I also have a source that told me Dale inquired about upcoming aldermanic seats on the Delafield Common Council.

Given the fact that my City friends are one of the richest communities in the State, and, if in fact that they are in some serious financial difficulties during these troubled times, and that expenses are being trimmed to the bone thru the end of the year, my question is this: Will the Cities alderpeople be giving up their salaries and help share the pain and be financially responsible....or will this be a case of "pay me FIRST and all others get less"?

If we in the Village share these same problems, I will be asking our people the same question.

I am not an Alderperson or the Mayor, but if asked, I'm sure they would be willing to forfeit five days of the $10.00 to $15.00 stipend per day which they receive as our elected officials. They are not at City Hall 5/7 but believe me, those who list their phone numbers spend plenty of time every day on the phone, answering questions and researching information for their constituents.

If all 7 of them returned 5 days of their stipend we would save a whopping (approximate) $575.00 this year. That's probably close to two days wages and benefits for the average city employee. But, every thing is relative. It's much more important to mow the grass for a ball game than it is to attempt to resolve issues involving budget short falls and whether or not to have Trick or Treat on the same day as the village.

There is a lot of waste at all government levels, but to single out elected officials seems to me to be quite petty. We (the Village and City) have two Administrators who make well over $100,000 each with benefits. They spent months working on a hypothetical "merged" budget that they claimed would have saved us all a total of $1.6 Million dollars. After we paid their salaries for months of meetings and calculations, there was a big OOPS.

They made a "mistake" of $600,000.

Why not ask them to return the wages we paid them to come up with a figure which is admittedly an exaggeration of the true savings? We could pay our elected officials an entire years salary if we didn't have to pay for the "mistake" at the administrative level.

    Andy,

In the City, we had some road projects that may have qualified for 'stimulus' money to help fund the project, however I do not believe that any of those projects were granted any funding.

I cannot say what may have or have not been applied for or granted to the Village.

Speaking of mistakes..it has been reported to me that the newly installed pier/stone, etc., that was recently installed by our Village bath house, is going to be removed and redone with different stone and pier configuration plus have more "green space" on the west side of the bldg.

    Opps

Since our DNR is involved with this project every step of the way, how can this be a screw up? You can't put anything at/in/near any water without full approvals and the threat of fines and our gov't dumping on you.

I wonder who is responsible for this mess and who is paying to fix it?

    Hey Duke and Dale,

I have heard that the position of Police Chief is dead too. The powers to be want to eliminate the position of Police Chief.

Any explanation! Sounds like a crazy idea to me.

Does that mean that we have a Permanet Acting Chief or is the Mayor taking on that role too?

Is it true the PFC held an emergency meeting and hired Ed McMahon as Police Chief and Farrah Fawcet as Assistant Fire Chief at the end of last week, in an attempt to placate the people of the City? This way they could say "We DID hire people for these positions, but they both unfortunately passed away on us. It will probably take another 2-3 years to find someone as qualified for these positions"?

I have it from a good source that this is true. Dale, please confirm or deny.

    Dale,

I was watching "Pewaukee's Police Chief Idol" last night, and I see that it's down to the final two contestants.

Dale, I am worried that if West Allis Capt. Charles Padgett gets the job, he will try to bring 'Stallis to Pewaukee by put dancing neon lights underneath all the squad cars, and changing the sirens to play Pantera. Is there anyway we can prevent him from doing this if he is selected by the common council's text message votes?

    Thanks
